Ahnen – means both ancestors and premonition in German. Right from the title of his solo exhibition at the Kassel Kunstverein, artist Zauri Matikashivili puts us to the test: He lays a deceptive trail while simultaneously leading us into a fog of semantic ambiguity. A premonition is not knowledge—and fittingly this “premonition,” described as a “forefeeling,” appears in the German dictionary right next to questionable concepts such as the “ancestral portrait,” the “lineage,” or “ancestral pride.”
In the style of participant observation, Zauri Matikashvili creates portraits of people and places—mental landscapes, reflections of the past and present. His documentary video installations take us to the remote edges of mythical forests and into the heart of society. They make collective imaginations tangible while handing us, by means of their subtle wit, the tools for critical reflection.
